<itunes:summary>This is kind of a downer episode of the BroadWave. I discuss a science fiction short story that presents a perfect society with one flaw, the only reason it is perfect is because one person within that society is treated like an animal. One innocent is sacrificed so the rest may live in absolute pleasure.
I was reminded of this story because of the report I heard on the radioshow Worldview which discussed the modern slave trade. We always think of slavery as occurring in the dens of authoritarian governments, Chinese labor prisons or some third world nation, but the United States has an ongoing slave trade. Why aren’t we horrified into unified action because I don’t know one person who supports slavery?
Some links to books on the subject:
Modern Slavery: The Secret World of 27 Million People
Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy
And this is a link to an organization that is trying to do something about slavery – these people would walk away from Utopia: Free The Slaves
I promise a funny BroadWave soon, to balance out all this serious dross.</itunes:summary>
