When in Doubt, Try Something Bold

By now you may have already heard about the bold and exciting trick play used in a middle school football game.  Here is a video of that play in case you aren’t familiar with it.

There are so many lessons to be learned from this but I’m going to focus on one. The audacity and boldness of the play amazed me and amazed a lot of people. For the record, the play was ruled legal by the officiating referees, but that isn’t the point. The point is look at all the ways this play could have failed. And if it failed, how dumb the offense would have looked. Yet it didn’t fail, and this play is going down in history.

Why did it work? The quarterback walked confidently, boldly, through the defensive line. The defense didn’t know how to react. The rest of the offensive line remained still so it didn’t seem like the play started yet the football is slowly being advanced up the field. I can’t help be feel inspired by this moment. All I can imagine is the fear and doubt the quarterback is feeling at the moment he takes that first step forward. He keeps his cool and runs the ball in for a touchdown.

When was the last time you did something bold and stupid? How did it work out for you?
