The Geek Index for December 14, 2009
Posted on 14 December 2009
The Geek Index suffered over the weekend with the plethora of family friendly holiday and Oscar seeking movies. The Princess and the Frog, The Blind Side, and Invictus topped the box office. All three only have very mild geek interest attached to them. The Princess and the Frog is Disney which always holds some interest for Geekdom. The Blind Side stars Sandra Bullock who is a blip on the general geek radar according to the Slashdot Gauge (whenever something is in doubt whether it appeals to geeks or not, a search for the topic is done on Slashdot.org to see the general appeal.) Invictus holds some appeal to history and political geeks but only a slight amount.
The television ratings are also taking a toll on the index because of the high appeal of sporting events. Three of the top 5 shows were all tied to Sunday football. The actual game at least has geek appeal due to its influence on Fantasy Football Leagues, so it isn’t a complete washout.
